Buddy Bags

In September 2010 as an expression of the First EPC mission statement to “Joyfully Share Jesus’ Love With All The World”, our congregation adopted Lafayette Park Elementary School as a neighbor whose needs might be met by our outreach. Kokomo Urban Outreach Buddy Bags is one way that our church reaches out to needy children in Kokomo. And what a joyful, fruitful ministry it has been!

Every other Friday during the school year, an average of 15 volunteers meets at a warehouse to pack 140 bags for Lafayette Park students who otherwise would have experienced insufficient food over the weekends. An average of 4 volunteers deliver these kid-friendly foods that are easy to open and to prepare. A typical Buddy Bag costs about $4.00 and contains 6 meals for the weekend: 2 breakfasts of instant oatmeal; 2 lunches of ramen noodles, canned tuna or chicken, mac and cheese or skillet dinner, canned soup; 2 dinners of canned soup and canned pasta dinner; 2 pouches of fruit snacks for vitamin C. Last year we provided Buddy Bags for an average of 140 qualifying students at Lafayette Park at a cost of $130 per student for the school year.

Our congregation supports this important children’s ministry with their prayers and financial support, packing and delivering Buddy Bags, and donating clean, plastic shopping bags for this purpose. In addition, our congregation’s donations of 1 lb peanut butter jars and boxes of fruit gel snacks have also made a big difference. What a blessing this ministry has been, both to these children as well as to us as a congregation seeking to serve as the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.
